Most of us do not enjoy waiting. We want answers now. We want progress now. We want God to move now. But some of God's greatest work happens during the seasons when we are forced to wait.
That is what we discover in the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1. Hannah longed to have a child. Yet year after year, her prayer remained unanswered. While others around her experienced what she desired most, Hannah continued to wait.
To make matters worse, her pain was not private. Peninnah, her husband's other wife, continually mocked her because she could not have children. The Bible says this happened year after year. What began as disappointment became an ongoing source of grief and humiliation.
Still, Hannah did not walk away from God. Each year, she continued to travel to Shiloh, the place of worship. Despite her heartbreak, she kept showing up. Despite her disappointment, she kept pursuing the Lord.
That may be one of the most important lessons from Hannah's story. When you are waiting on God, don't stop pursuing God. Many people begin well but grow discouraged when God does not answer according to their timeline. Hannah teaches us that faith remains faithful even when answers seem delayed.
Eventually, Hannah brought her pain honestly before the Lord in a very public way. Scripture tells us she prayed in deep anguish and wept bitterly. She did not hide her emotions. She did not pretend everything was fine. She poured out her soul to God.
Sometimes we think faith means hiding our struggles. Hannah shows us something different. Faith means bringing our struggles to God. God is not intimidated by our questions, fears, disappointments, or tears. He already knows what is in our hearts. Prayer invites us to place those burdens into His hands.
As Hannah prayed, even the priest misunderstood her. Eli assumed she was drunk rather than recognizing she was desperately seeking God. Yet Hannah refused to let someone else's misunderstanding derail her pursuit of the Lord. That is an important reminder for all of us. Not everyone will understand what God is doing in your life. Some people will misinterpret your actions. Others may unintentionally say hurtful things.
Keep pursuing God anyway.
After hearing Hannah's explanation, Eli blessed her and encouraged her to trust the Lord.
What happened next is remarkable. The circumstances had not changed. She was still waiting. She was still childless. Yet Scripture says she went away, ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.
Why? Because she found peace before she found provision. God changed something inside Hannah before He changed anything around Hannah. Eventually, "in the course of time," God answered her prayer and gave her a son named Samuel.
But the greatest lesson of Hannah's story is not that God always gives us exactly what we want. The greatest lesson is that God can sustain us while we wait. Notice the progression:
Hannah's pain. Hannah's prayer. Hannah's peace. God's provision.
Many of us want to skip directly to provision, but God often meets us with His peace first.
If you find yourself in a season of waiting today, take heart. God sees you. God hears you.
God has not forgotten you. And while you wait for His answer, you can rest in His presence. The same God who was faithful to Hannah is faithful today. Trust Him with the timing, the outcome, and the whole of your story.
